Hi Stephanie,
I will do the best I can to explain. If you cut across a piece of fabric with scissors, and you should try this, you will not be able to pull one thread clear across your piece of fabric. If you rip the fabric across, you will be able to pull one thread straight across your whole piece of cloth. Most of the time when fabric is woven the grain is off, meaning the threads are not perfectly perpendicular to each other. If your cloth is not on the straight of grain, when you wash them, they will always lay crooked. This step is also necessary when you make fringed napkins, and when you try these, you will definitely be able to see what I mean. If I am still confusing you, go to the links that I am placing here. http://www.getcreativeshow.com/seminars/straightgrain.htm and also go to http://learnhowtoquilt.com/straitgrain.html for another example and a great picture.

"3. At each cut end of the fabric, go down from edge approx. ½” and make a small cut. You are now going to rip the fabric across to the other side. This puts your fabric straight on the grain and allows your napkins to always be square."

I am a beginner...Can you please explain this step in a little more detail? Thanks! I can't wait to make these napkins.
