JUST WHO ARE WE?
We are a couple who have been married for 23 years, we live in a small town in southern Michigan. We both work at home, we both love dishes and hate paper plates. We love to find quaint little places for lunch on Sundays, and we were both brought up with cloth napkins on the table for special occasions. So it was to be, that we carried on the tradition every time we hosted a special dinner. I have always loved to use them, and they always made me feel a little elegant. I have had the experience several times when a few guests have not used one, as if they might soil it. Heaven only knows what they did use! Hopefully not my tablecloth or their pants. Anyway, we recently found this remarkable little restaurant in Michigan. The food is absolutely out of this world! Everything is fresh and completely organic, even their handmade cloth napkins! Yes, all of the napkins on the tables are large double sided cloth napkins made from 100% cotton in a wide array of colors. In fact, most tables had a different pattern. They even sell them as you exit the restaurant. The stacks are neatly grouped by color and catch most everyone’s eye. We were told that they were all made by one of the staff. Well, I have been sewing since I was in seventh grade and on the way home I started to calculate how to make my own. I remembered the tub of fabrics I have stored in the garage, and by the time I was there, I had it all figured out. I started in, and by the next day I had thirty-three of my own. There were a few Christmas prints, some calico, some flowers and even some frogs. None of them were an exact size, most were approximately 12 to 16 inches, as I made them as large as the fabric allowed to get as many as possible. By the time I had finished, I had my husband convinced that we should go completely green and use them on a daily basis. But, the more we discussed the napkins, the more we realized what a wonderful idea it would be if everyone used them. We would be saving the world in a huge way. Stop using all of the paper products, especially paper towels and think what we could do. Start carrying one in your purse to use where ever you happen to be, and leave the paper products alone.
We decided to start a site where everyone can share their ideas on cloth napkins and coming soon, sell their own versions. There are many ways to create your own designs and we can share those ideas with others. There are even ways to make your own napkins without a sewing machine and some you don’t have to even take the first stitch Let’s all take a stand and promote the use of cloth napkins.
